Romania's IT Services Market Grows Beyond Expectations in 2007, According to IDC Bucharest
26. listopadu, 2008
Romania's IT services market performed above expectations in 2007 and is expected to continue solid growth, despite the current economic downturn. According to a recent IDC study, spending on IT service in Romania exceeded $363 million in 2007, representing year-on-year growth of 48.7% in U.S. dollars. In local currency, the market grew 29.2%. The market was driven mainly by large projects in the oil and gas, banking, telecommunications, and central government sectors.
"The wave of foreign investment in Romanian banking, telecoms, oil and gas, retail, and manufacturing brought about the need for IT infrastructure harmonization, to align with head office IT policies, as well as to implement standards and best practices," says Calin Mirea, Research Analyst, IDC Romania. "These harmonization projects have become excellent revenue sources for local subsidiaries of large international IT companies and, more recently, for big names in IT consulting."
Romania's IT services market is dominated by international players, which occupy all of the top ten positions. The biggest three providers last year were HP, IBM, and S&T, with a combined market share that exceeded 31%. Whereas HP and IBM swapped positions compared to the year before, S&T moved up from the fourth position in 2006 to replace SIVECO.
Systems integration accounted for the largest share of IT services revenue in 2007, at 26.7%, followed by hardware support and installation (15.5%) and applications consulting and customization (15.2%). IDC expects these services categories to continue to play a major role in Romania's IT market over the next five years.
The biggest customer for IT services in Romania in 2007 was the combined manufacturing sector, accounting for 18.3% of total spending. The government sector placed second, with 18.2%. The third largest spender was the combined finance sector, with 15.6% market share.
IDC expects that spending on IT services in Romania will continue to grow quickly over the next five years, with almost 22% average annual growth. IT services investments will be driven by the direct and indirect effects of EU accession, and by economic developments and increasing technology consumption in general.
